Hiking / Scrambling Courses

Course Descriptions

Many mountain peaks—with spectacular views—can be reached through trekking and scrambling. As with all our offerings, we’ve curated courses that not only focus on building your technical skills but also deliver unforgettable experiences in stunning alpine environments.

Our ultimate goal is to equip you with the knowledge and confidence to take these skills into your own adventures. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker looking to explore more technical terrain or a climber working toward bigger mountaineering objectives, scrambling is a powerful step forward in your progression.

Scrambling Courses

In these courses, there are two primary goals. The first is to safely summit a mountain. The second—arguably more important—is to develop a toolkit that makes that experience repeatable. You’ll gain the knowledge and skills to approach future objectives with confidence and self-reliance, not just follow a guide to the top.

Led by professional guides, each course covers route-finding, movement techniques, hazard recognition, and decision-making in the alpine environment. You’ll learn how to identify when scrambling turns into climbing, and when to turn around altogether.

What You'll Learn

Each course covers different objectives, but here are some core skills you may develop along the way:

  • Selecting an appropriate scramble based on your experience and fitness level

  • Packing effectively for safety, efficiency, and success in alpine terrain

  • Navigating and route-finding in Class 3 and Class 4 terrain

  • Moving confidently on loose rock and managing rockfall hazards

  • Identifying and responding to environmental risks

  • Minimizing your impact through Leave No Trace principles

  • And most importantly—enjoying the journey and reaching a summit with confidence!

Locations

Currently, all of our scrambling courses take place in western Canada—in the mountains of British Columbia and Alberta. However, we’re always expanding our offerings and frequently plan custom courses for individuals and small groups. If you’re interested in a specific mountain, route, or region, let us know and we’ll help design the right experience for you.

(c) Six (6) calendar days or fewer prior to the course: Customer is not entitled to a refund.

The guide has the sole discretion to cancel the course because of the weather. If the guide cancels the course before it begins, you and the guide will work  together to arrange an alternate date for the guided trip, a credit for the guide’s services, or an appropriate refund. We won’t offer refunds if the course is canceled once it begins, unless you and the guide agree otherwise.

Shaun of Climb Onsight organized a successful corporate event for our firm retreat in Phoenix, Arizona. We had a great time rock climbing at Echo Canyon Trailhead. Some of us were first-timers and Shaun was truly an excellent source from beginning to end. Highly recommend Climb Onsight if you are looking to book a rock climbing event!

Had a fantastic time on an ice climbing trip booked through Climb Onsight! The process was seamless and we saved so much time on researching guides. The Muskoka Mountainworks guides are the best. They were patient with us newbies and made sure everyone had a nice balance of challenge and fun. The incredible location also made for an unforgettable day.

Shaun and Jonathan were great guides for ice climbing, it was our first time but they were sure to give us good guidance but also room to do things on our own. Highly recommend if anyone wants to try ice climbing!

I worked together with Shaun at Climb Onsight to put on an ice climbing clinic at Festiglace, an ice climbing festival in Quebec. Shaun was great to work with, organizing the logistics for our guests and communicating directly with the Festiglace organizers. Thanks for a good trip out East!
